Correct Score for Big Favourites: How Often 3-0, 4-0 and More Land

Across 22 European leagues, the shortest favourites win big far more often than the obvious 1-0 or 2-0 suggests. The fair prices on 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0 tell the story.

The number6,453matches with a favourite under 1.40

When a side is priced under 1.40, most punters reach for 2-0 or 1-0 and call it discipline. I wanted to know which scorelines actually come in at those prices, and how often the favourite runs up four or more. The same thinking sits behind today's correct score picks, but here I am looking at the base rates on their own.

The sample is 6,453 matches with a favourite under 1.40, with 12,098 more priced 1.40-1.69 for comparison. The headline answer: 2-0 is the most common single score at 12.2%, but the tail grows quickly as the price shortens. Under 1.20, the favourite scored four or more 32.7% of the time, and that changes where the value sits.

01Two-nil leads, but the big wins crowd close behind

This chart ranks the twelve most common scores for favourites under 1.40, with the favourite's goals first. 2-0 tops it at 12.2%, with 1-0 and 2-1 level on 10.7% and 3-0 barely behind on 10.2%. Nothing dominates; the top four are bunched within a couple of points of each other.

Look further down and the lopsided scores keep turning up. 4-0 lands 6.4% of the time and 5-0 3.6%, matching 2-2 and sitting just above 0-0 at 3.5%. In other words, a five-goal rout is about as likely as a goalless draw for these sides.

What I take from this is that the 'safe' scores are not really safer. They are simply the ones everyone backs, which is exactly why they rarely carry a decent price.

02Shorter prices push the favourite's goal tally sharply upward

Here I split the favourite's own goal total by pre-match price. At 1.40-1.69, scoring nil or one is the biggest block at 41%, and four or more manages only 12.6%. Move to under 1.20 and the picture flips: four or more becomes the largest slice at 32.7%, with nil or one shrinking to 19%.

The middle bands step down cleanly between those extremes, with four or more at 23.8% for 1.20-1.29 and 19.2% for 1.30-1.39. Three or more follows the same gradient, from 56.7% at the shortest prices to 30.1% in the comparison band.

For me this is the core of the study. The price is not just telling you who wins; it is telling you how many goals to expect, and the market for big scorelines often lags behind that signal.

03How individual scorelines shift as the favourite's price shortens

The heatmap tracks each scoreline across four price bands. 2-0 barely moves, hovering around twelve per cent in every band under 1.40, so it is a poor guide to anything. The interesting rows are the ones that move: 3-0 climbs to 12.3% under 1.20, almost level with 2-0 at 12.8%, while 4-0 reaches 8.3%.

The low-scoring outcomes travel the other way. 1-0 falls to 9.4% at the shortest prices against 12.2% in the 1.40-1.69 band, and 1-1 drops to well under half of its comparison-band share.

When I build a spread of scorelines for a heavy favourite, this is the table I lean on. The draws and narrow wins are where the shorter prices hurt most, and the three- and four-goal margins are where they help.

04Fair odds for three-nil, four-nil and five-nil routs

Fair odds here are simply one divided by the observed frequency: the break-even price with no bookmaker margin. Under 1.20, a 3-0 has fair odds of 8.14, a 4-0 12.01 and a 5-0 16.36. At 1.30-1.39 those same scores widen to 11.08, 18.98 and 46.97, which shows how quickly the tail thins as the favourite looks less dominant.

The broader lines are useful too. Favourite scores four or more is fair at 3.06 under 1.20, and the favourite failing to win sits at 7.59 there against 3.74 at 1.30-1.39.

My main caveat: correct-score markets carry a much heavier margin than the match result, and the shortest prices cluster around a few dominant clubs, so these figures are minimum acceptable prices drawn from history, not quotes or forecasts. Any single correct-score bet still loses most of the time.

Correct Score checklist

  • Check the exact price band. Four or more goals ran at 32.7% under 1.20 but 19.2% at 1.30-1.39, so the band matters more than the badge. Treat a favourite in the 1.30-1.39 band very differently from one priced under 1.20.
  • Compare against fair odds. Under 1.20 a 3-0 is fair at 8.14 and a 4-0 at 12.01. If the offered price is not comfortably above those figures, the margin has eaten the edge.
  • Spread across big margins. At the shortest prices 3-0 at 12.3% nearly matches 2-0 at 12.8%. Covering several lopsided scores reflects how these matches actually finish better than one narrow guess.

Quick answers

What is the most common correct score when a heavy favourite wins?

For favourites under 1.40, 2-0 to the favourite was the most common score at 12.2%. 1-0 and 2-1 followed at 10.7% each.

How often does a big favourite score four or more goals?

Favourites priced under 1.20 scored four or more goals 32.7% of the time, and a 4-0 specifically landed 8.3% of the time, giving fair odds of 12.01.

How often do very short-priced favourites fail to win?

Favourites under 1.20 failed to win 13.2% of the time, rising to 26.7% for those priced 1.30-1.39. That is why the draw-heavy scores fade as the price shortens.
