Bettors treat an away favourite as a slightly weaker version of a home favourite, as if the journey itself costs them something. I wanted to test that in half-time/full-time, where the question is not only whether they win but when the match turns. The sample is 22,660 league matches in which the away side was priced shorter than the hosts.
The headline is simple. Short-priced visitors lead and win often, with Away/Away landing 51.2% under 1.40. At the same price they convert almost exactly as home favourites do. The real story sits at the longer end, where the draw at the break becomes the main threat, and that shapes how I write up today's HT/FT picks.
01Nine HT/FT outcomes across five away favourite price bands
The heatmap lays out all nine results, column by column, from the shortest away favourites to the loosest. Across every away favourite, Away/Away lands 29.2%, Draw/Away 16.1% and Draw/Draw 15.5%. Those three rows hold most of the colour, and the rest is thin.
Read the Away/Away row left to right and it falls steadily, from 51.2% under 1.40 to 22.1% at 2.30 or longer. Draw/Draw moves the opposite way, from 8.5% up to 17.8%. In the 1.90–2.29 band, Draw/Draw at 16.1% actually edges past Draw/Away at 15.7%.

| <1.40 | 1.40–1.59 | 1.60–1.89 | 1.90–2.29 | 2.30+ | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home/Home | 4.6% | 7.7% | 10.7% | 15.0% | 17.2% |
| Draw/Home | 3.3% | 4.5% | 7.6% | 9.7% | 12.8% |
| Away/Home | 0.7% | 1.5% | 1.6% | 2.1% | 2.5% |
| Home/Draw | 2.8% | 3.6% | 5.1% | 5.3% | 5.7% |
| Draw/Draw | 8.5% | 11.6% | 13.9% | 16.1% | 17.8% |
| Away/Draw | 3.5% | 4.6% | 5.3% | 5.5% | 5.4% |
| Home/Away | 3.9% | 3.5% | 3.7% | 3.4% | 2.7% |
| Draw/Away | 21.5% | 20.2% | 18.3% | 15.7% | 13.8% |
| Away/Away | 51.2% | 42.7% | 33.9% | 27.1% | 22.1% |
What I take from this is that the market loses its shape as the price drifts. A short away favourite gives you one dominant outcome. A favourite at 2.30+ gives you three or four plausible ones, and the stalemate is close to the most likely of them.
02How travelling favourites build wins from the half-time position
This chart takes only the matches the away favourite won and asks where they stood at the break. Under 1.40, 66.8% of wins came from a half-time lead, 28.1% from level and 5.1% from behind. At 2.30 or longer, the lead share drops to 57.4% and the level share rises to 35.6%.
So the weaker the favourite, the more of its winning is done after the interval. The gap between winning and winning via a half-time lead is +25.4 points under 1.40 and +16.5 points at 2.30 or longer, which tells you how much value sits in the second half.
View the data: how away favourite wins are built
| Led at HT (Away/Away) | Level at HT (Draw/Away) | Behind at HT (Home/Away) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| <1.40 | 66.8% | 28.1% | 5.1% |
| 1.40–1.59 | 64.3% | 30.4% | 5.3% |
| 1.60–1.89 | 60.7% | 32.7% | 6.6% |
| 1.90–2.29 | 58.7% | 33.9% | 7.4% |
| 2.30+ | 57.5% | 35.6% | 6.9% |
Comebacks from behind are rare at every price. Home/Away lands only 3.2% of all away-favourite matches, so I don't build a case around a visitor turning a deficit round.
03Away and home favourites convert at almost identical rates
Here I set the favourite-leads-and-wins rate for each venue side by side at matching prices. In the 1.40–1.59 band, away favourites land Away/Away at 42.7% against 41.2% Home/Home for home favourites. In the 1.90–2.29 band it is 27.1% against 26.9%.
Only under 1.40 does the home side pull slightly ahead, and from 1.40 upwards the dots almost touch. The price has already absorbed the venue. An away favourite is not a discounted favourite once you compare like with like.
View the data: same price, different venue
| Home fav (Home/Home) | Away fav (Away/Away) | |
|---|---|---|
| <1.40 | 54.4% | 51.2% |
| 1.40–1.59 | 41.2% | 42.7% |
| 1.60–1.89 | 33.3% | 33.9% |
| 1.90–2.29 | 26.9% | 27.1% |
| 2.30+ | 21.4% | 22.1% |
That matters because many bettors shade away prices further on instinct. The data gives no reason to treat a visitor at a given price as weaker in this market.
04Break-even HT/FT prices for every away favourite band
The table converts each frequency into fair odds, the decimal price at which a bet breaks even with no margin. Away/Away is fair at 1.95 under 1.40 and 4.52 at 2.30+. Draw/Away runs from 4.65 to 7.27, and at 2.30+ Draw/Draw is fair at 5.63, shorter than the Draw/Away fair price of 7.27.
The caveat I always repeat: HT/FT carries a much heavier bookmaker margin than the match result market, so these figures are the minimum I would accept, not a quote to expect. They are also historical rates, not a forecast, and a few hundred bets can stray a long way from them.
| Away price | Matches | Away/Away | Draw/Away | Draw/Draw | Away/Draw | Home/Away |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| <1.40 | 1,377 | 1.95 | 4.65 | 11.77 | 28.69 | 25.50 |
| 1.40–1.59 | 1,820 | 2.34 | 4.95 | 8.63 | 21.93 | 28.44 |
| 1.60–1.89 | 3,802 | 2.95 | 5.48 | 7.17 | 18.92 | 27.16 |
| 1.90–2.29 | 7,452 | 3.68 | 6.39 | 6.19 | 18.13 | 29.22 |
| 2.30+ | 8,209 | 4.52 | 7.27 | 5.63 | 18.53 | 37.31 |
I treat Draw/Away around the 1.90–2.29 band, fair at 6.39, as the price to watch. It is where a favourite that tends to work the game slowly can be underrated in the level-at-the-break scenario.
HT/FT checklist
- Check the price band first. The favourite's price decides the shape of the grid. Away/Away lands 51.2% under 1.40 but only 22.1% at 2.30+, so the same selection means very different things across bands.
- Respect the half-time draw. At 2.30 or longer, 35.6% of away wins come from level at the break and Draw/Draw lands 17.8%. Price the draw at half-time as a central scenario, not a footnote.
- Demand at least fair odds. Compare the quote with the fair price, such as 3.68 for Away/Away in the 1.90–2.29 band. If the offer is shorter, the margin has eaten the bet.
